Chinatown Restaurant

Chinatown Restaurant serving since 1919 in heart of San Francisco

Enter America’s oldest Chinatown and the largest outside of Asia via the Grant Avenue Dragon Gate. In a matter of moments, hungry visitors arrive at Chinatown Restaurant where fans of Dim Sum know that this historic restaurant serves the famous Cantonese dumplings all day long.

History and Location

Good fortune has smiled since the family enterprise, Chinatown Restaurant, opened its doors in 1919 in the aftermath of World War One. It is an essential part of the story of the rebuilding and recovery of San Francisco following the Great Earthquake and Fire of 1906, when 80 percent of the city was destroyed and old Chinatown along with it.

Surrounded by produce markets, pagodas, parks and squares, this is home to a deeply entrenched San Francisco community spanning several generations, as well being as a visitor attraction as popular as the Golden Gate Bridge.

Grab your chopsticks for an authentic dining experience. Seats on the charming balcony offer a rare Chinatown experience and are highly sought after, but luck may be on your side.

Chinatown Restaurant not only serves Dim Sum all day, but also offers no fewer than three dozen varieties, including pork, seafood, chicken, beef and vegetarian. There’s also all manner of Peking duck, live seafood, Cantonese, Szechuan and Mandarin style dishes.

Traditional favorites from the main course menu include spicy Kung Pao chicken, General Tso’s chicken, Mu Shu pork, beef with Chinese broccoli, salt & pepper crab and fish with ginger, scallion and bok choy.

Restaurant-goers can open and close a meal with compliments of the house. Present a coupon for free potsticker appetizers and free green tea ice cream to finish.

Getting there

Dining in San Francisco’s Chinatown is always a great idea, but driving into the small streets and passageways of the busy neighborhood is by far a much trickier prospect.

Chinatown is easy to reach on foot, by several Muni bus lines and by BART rapid transit. However, if you find yourself behind the wheel of a car, it’s good to know that Chinatown Restaurant offers two-hour parking validation (and free Wi-Fi, too) with a $30 purchase.
